Books to take to the beach...

Is it okay to read trashy novels at the beach?  Is this the only place that the reading of such novels is deemed literarily (?) and socially acceptable?  Is it ever acceptable to admit a love for the trashy romance?  I say, trashy romance lovers unite!  Hot sun, itchy sand, children happily (!) playing - steamy, lusty romance...  what could be better?  A book you can pick up whenever there is a spare minute (in between washing dishes in a camp bucket, sweeping out the tent, attempting to find the kid's hats for the ten millionth time), and put down again (when the children need rescuing from the monstrous and fearless seagulls and each other), without losing the plot.  There is no deep and meaningful subtext to worry about, no need to remember who was who and how you are going to sound intellectual when discussing it with your book club - just pure and unadulterated brain mash with a hot and sexy guy (with an often strange lack of body hair - and really odd belly buttons (if you go by the front covers - the last couple I picked up had navels reminiscent of the children's guinea pig's genitalia - most disconcerting)).  Escapism at its best  - afterall, we flee to the beach to physically escape our normal life, so trashy books are a way of intellectually escaping our normal life.  In fact, you are probably doing yourself a favour...

I have stocked up on Nora Roberts (possibly not trashy enough - a couple of her suspense thrillers rather than her straight romances), some chick lit by someone (one of those books that is interchangeable with any of the books with the brightly coloured writing and the cartoon drawings of a couple with the woman invariably standing with one foot in the air(!)), and some cheap Kindle downloads.  I will be watching out for (and writing down), any more badly written sex scenes to share - after all, why should my retinas be the only ones to burn out due to the graphic scenes?
