I try not to think of myself as excessively prudish (Catholic education notwithstanding), but some of the 'paranormal romances' that are about seem to more about the graphic sex scenes than any decent paranormal storylines or character development. I am the owner of a Kindle so have downloaded a lot of cheap books (and maybe that is my answer... cheap because they are truly awful), thinking that I would be reading some good fantasy (in terms of magic fantasy - not erotic fantasy), and found some truly cringe-worthy sex scenes held together by minimal story and paper-thin characters. Vaguely reminsicent of Laurell K. Hamilton's later works (and therein is the subject of a whole lot of blog). It seems that if you throw in a few, invariably handsome, vampires and some shapeshifters you can sell some truly awful writing. I like sex scenes in books - if they are well-written (there is a fantastic scene in Jennifer Crusie's "Welcome to Temptation", which I think is one of the best sex scenes I have read), and they contribute to the story.
"Cream flooded her nether lips as her pussy swelled with desire" - this is the calibre of the writing I am talking about. The above is an actual quote - from an actual ebook that I was foolish enough to pay a couple of dollars for. Anyone else got some good quotes?

Reading whilst packing
Well, it has finally happened - a moment when I am finding it difficult to squeeze enough time in the day to read! The moving boxes are here and all we have to do now is fill them up. Unfortunately I think they may have underestimated how many books we actually have and have not included enough book boxes to pack in. Both Russ and I have already done a substantial weed and donated many of them to Steven's Book Exchange and the Library book sale. The only rooms free of actual bookshelves in the house are the bathroom (they are not free of actual books though). The new is house is much smaller so not sure where they will all be able to go - will have to make sure when we extend we include lots of built in shelves.
I have been re-reading a bit of Jayne Castle (a.k.a. as Jayne Anne Krentz), who I have to admit I like but on second reading they become a bit formulaic. Which is probably understandable considering her output. I have recently read some of her earlier stuff (conveniently re-published recently - I was thinking that it was new books and got really excited), and have found it fairly dated. Especially in regards to the female characters - the women's revolution seems to be a really new, and as yet, untested/untried thing to them. They seem somewhat spineless and, as a jarring note in the noughties, there is an excessive amount of smoking going on!
